MOBS – spreading the message

July 18th, 2007

The last few weeks were spent reaching out to people who had complaints, doubts, information and the like about MOBS. It’s been a learning experience. While some users have taken to MOBS like fish to water – many had been struggling with the new concept and the steps required.

We’ve been trying to reach out to these – the ones who have shown a willingness to try out this new way of communicating but who had been stuck midway. It’s been well worth the effort as we see a lot of users getting active and starting to make connections.

While we were concentrating on MOBS we had to take our eye of MyToday.mobi for a while. But now having learnt how MOBS moves, it’s time to have both MOBS and MyToday.mobi gather momentum.

Wish us luck!

MOBS is out there!

June 27th, 2007

MOBS is finally out there and rocking!

We had a release that went along expected lines and people have started accepting it quite well. It’s still early days, but we are sure MOBs is something which everyone will appreciate.

So what exactly are MOBs?
MOBs are SMS groups being offered by MyToday. This is how it works. You create an sms group and invite people to subscribe to it. For example, you could create a group called Myfriends. And you’ll invite all your friends to join it. Then, anyone can publish a message – and everyone receives it!

What’s the special part?
Quite a few things. 1) You can create a unique group and have as many people join it. It needn’t be just for friends, but also for family, colleagues, your co-travelers, residential society, etc. 2) No matter how many members are in your group, you’ll be charged for just 1 sms. Just to clarify, this sms cost is decided by your service provider. Since it’s a short code, as everyone knows, the rates are slightly higher. It could be Rs. 1 or 2 or 3 usually. If you have doubts about this, please do call and check with your service provider. We are no where in the picture regarding this – the service provider decides and we have no association with it. Any way – so suppose you have 20 friends in your group, you’ll still be charged for just 1 sms! We bear the rest of the cost. 3) You can also send future sms – as in type in your sms and put the date and time it should go – and it goes at that particular time. So you don’t have to remember to do it. 4) Plus you can control who can publish or not publish. 5) You can all do this from http://pub.mytoday.com

If you want to read it in detail – check http://mobs.mytoday.com

If you are excited and want to start immediately, then do the following:

1. sms ACCEPT to 757585 to indicate that you accept our terms of service. You can read it on http://pub.mytoday.com.

2. sms CREATE <your group name> to 757585. Example sms CREATE Merafriends to 757585

3. Invite your friends. Ask them to join your friends by doing START <your group name> to 757585. For example START merafriends to 757585

4. Then anyone can publish by doing sms PUB Merafriends <your message> to 757585. Example: sms PUB Merafriends Hey guys, we are going pubbing this weekend! to 757585.

You get 80 characters to write your message.

So try it out and let everyone know about it too!

Cheers

MOB Posters!

June 19th, 2007

Last week was spent designing posters for MOBS – the group sms product from MyToday. The effort was well-worth it as the posters came out real well. You can check http://mobs.mytoday.com to know all about this. It’s really a great way to communicate – especially for the youth and for businesses. I really feel it’s something that will catch on for its sheer usefulness and coolness.

I’ll try to upload the posters here so that you could give your feedback on it.

On MyToday, we are trying to focus on getting more users on the site. We are growing at a steady rate – and with all the work we are doing on MOBS – we are fairly happy that the rate of growth is holding up. But we don’t want to be in this situation for long – we really need want our registrations, visits, and page views to move from steady to quick to a zoom.

There are a couple of great ideas in the pipeline to boost MyToday growth. Some of which we will be ready to announce in a week – or as soon as we get MOBS on to a smooth road…

Is it going to rain? Check it on MyToday

June 4th, 2007

The rainy season is here – and if previous years have been any indication – this year too we can expect the rains to throw a spanner to a lot of travel plans. Forget long-distance travel – even traveling within our town or city could be a nightmare. Ask us Mumbaiites. Every day will bring for us the usual train delays, traffic jams and what have you.

So, something like a weather check just before you leave home could be very handy. We have something like that on mytoday.com. And it’s not just for Mumbaiites – but for people all over India. Which means practically all the towns and cities in India. Check it now to verify if your town/city is covered – then check it every day to see what the weather has in store for you!

Have a good rainy season!

Sober or Colourful look?

May 30th, 2007

We have a sober-looking MyToday as default and a new MyToday home page which has colourful bands. When you look at the home pages on a mobile, most of us believe the colourful look wins – but when you look at the same home page on the web interface – not everyone seems so enthusiastic. Do we go for sober or colour? The same design, when seen from a different perspective begs the question – do we design for the PC or the GPRS user?

And that’s a dilemna we are facing. While we are designing with GPRS user in mind, a lot of our current users are PC Internet users. Do we try to please our PC users compromising on the principles for GPRS design – or do we continue to design for GPRS usage, letting our PC users down in terms of overall look and feel?

The sober bands vs colourful bands is just one of these questions. Any thoughts welcome.

Issue with cricket update as India score historic win

May 28th, 2007

Ok – not many people were tuned in when India won its biggest match in terms of numbers. But if you were on MyToday you should have caught it. We had a small glitch in case you noticed – the scorecard for the second Bangladesh innings didn’t show up. As I write, we are just about to bring it up. Hope you guys have a dekko at it – just for the effort we put in.

Today, we have also released a Special Day section for you. It has all the special days of the year for your reference. Quite useful if you want to know about some of the cool days people celebrate.

MyToday launches Astrology section

May 24th, 2007

If you thought getting ball-by-ball cricket scores, live Sensex updates and the latest breaking news on your GPRS phone was cool – we’ve just launched an Astro service on MyToday.mobi.

What does it have? The first is Compatibility matching – enter the date of birth, time, and place of birth of the two people – and there you have. No need to visit your panditji – you can know your compatibility in a jiffy. Plus there’s daily forecasts by Marjorie Orr if you just want to see what the stars have in store for you – plus Rahukalam, Hora, Panchang from Kalnirnay and more!

Check it out on your PC or best on your mobile GPRS and let me know what you think!

Do tell your friends and folks about it too! That would be a favour.
